Gastric Sleeve

If you’ve tried to lose weight through diet and exercise with little success, it may be time to consider bariatric surgery.  Jacksonville Premier Surgical Specialists produces life-changing results for patients every day in Jacksonville, Florida.  Dr. Freshour offers a variety of weight loss procedures, but the most popular offering is the gastric sleeve.

The gastric sleeve is popular because it is a relatively straightforward procedure that enables patients to experience dramatic long-term weight loss in less than a year.  Gastric Sleeve Surgery is considered to be a safer procedure because it has fewer risks than other bariatric surgeries.  It reduces the size of the stomach to less than 1/4 of its original size by removing the extra stomach tissue and leaving the remaining part in the form of a “sleeve”.  By creating a smaller stomach, you feel very full after eating smaller portions, which reduces your caloric intake.  According to a study conducted by the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, 98% of gastric sleeve recipients showed effective results without any complications.

Another reason why gastric sleeve surgery is so popular is the short recovery process.  This surgery is done robotically, which is a low-risk and less-invasive procedure that requires only small incisions.  After the completion of the surgery, you will have to stay in the hospital for one night so that our medical staff can monitor and assist you in your recovery.  After a few post-operative tests, you are able to go home around noon the following day.

Your recovery depends on how well you follow the post-operative guidelines immediately following surgery.  Rest is imperative after surgery, but you will be required to walk a good bit to decrease pain and avoid blood clots.  In most cases, it takes about 1-3 weeks to fully recover.
