Bariatric High Protein Liquid Diet

  • POD #1: Aim to finish 1 protein supplement and 1 bottle of water (or the equivalent as ice chips). Drink more if you able.
  • POD #2+: Increase protein shakes and fluids as tolerated. Aim for 1 medicine cup every 15 minutes.
  • POD #7: Begin to aim for 40gm of protein per day plus at least 24oz of water (or Crystal Light)
  • POD #14: Begin to aim for 80gm of protein per day plus at least 48oz of water (or Crystal Light).
  • Tips:
    • Sip slowly and continuously on protein shakes and water throughout the day.
    • Avoid sugary drinks and carbonated beverages,
    • Do not drink from straws, especially if you had a hiatal hernia repair
  • See info above under the pre-op liquid diet for further details and suggestions
  • Please keep track of your protein and fluid intake on the Protein and Fluid Intake Diary
  • Your staple line is the only thing holding your stomach together. DO NOT stress it out by filling your stomach up with food and drink and DO NOT advance your diet too quickly. NO CARBONATION!!! Your stomach will not be healed for at least 6 weeks.
  • If you are having difficulty with sips, back off to ice chips and popsicles for another 24hrs. Freeze your clear protein drink in an ice tray; once frozen, break a cube with a meat mallet to create clear protein ice chips.
